The Heartbreaking Transformation Only 12 Months Has Made in America
In late October 2024, the situation was entirely distinct. Prior to the national election, thoughtful Americans could admit America's serious imperfections – its unfairness and imbalance – but they still could perceive it as the US. A democratic nation. A place where constitutional order held significance. A nation led by a dignified and upright leader, despite his advanced age and increasing frailty.
These days, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens hardly identify the nation we inhabit. Persons suspected of being illegal immigrants are rounded up and pushed into transport, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for an obscene ballroom. The leader is persecuting his political rivals or alleged foes and demanding legal authorities surrender a massive sum of citizen dollars. Armed military personnel are being sent to US urban areas under fabricated reasons. The Pentagon, renamed the War Department, has practically liberated itself of routine media oversight during its expenditure of possibly reaching almost one trillion dollars of taxpayer money. Institutions, law firms, news companies are yielding from leader's menaces, and billionaires are treated like aristocracy.
“The US, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has fallen over the limit toward dictatorship and extremism,” a noted author, stated recently. “In the end, faster than I thought feasible, it occurred in this country.”
One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – how deeply lost we are, and the rapid pace with which it occurred.
Nevertheless, we know that Trump was properly voted in. Following his deeply disturbing first term and despite the warnings associated with the awareness of Project 2025 – even after the president personally declared plainly he intended to rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans selected him instead of the other candidate.
Frightening as the present situation are, it's more daunting to recognize that we have only been three-quarters of a year under this leadership. How will three more years of this deterioration find us? And what if the three years becomes something even longer, as there is not anyone to restrain this president from opting that a third term is required, maybe for security concerns?
Admittedly, all is not lost. We will have legislative votes the coming year that may create a new governmental control, if Democrats regain either chamber of Congress. There exist government representatives who are striving to apply some accountability, such as lawmakers who are initiating an inquiry into the attempted money grab from legal authorities.
And a presidential election three years from now could initiate our journey to recovery exactly as the prior selection put us on this regrettable path.
We see countless citizens protesting in the streets throughout communities, as they did last weekend at democracy demonstrations.
An ex-cabinet member, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of America is stirring”, exactly as before post-McCarthyism in that decade or amid anti-war demonstrations or during the Nixon controversy.
In those instances, the tilting vessel finally returned to balance.
The author states he understands the signs of that resurgence and observes it occurring currently. As evidence, he cites the recent massive protests, the widespread, cross-party resistance regarding a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept the defense department’s demands they solely cover authorized information.
“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive before certain corruption turns extremely harmful, a particular deed so disrespectful toward public welfare, certain violence so loud, that he is compelled except to rise.”
It’s an optimistic take, and I respect his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may prove to be right.
At the same time, the big questions persist: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it reclaim its position internationally and its adherence to constitutional order?
Or must we acknowledge that the historical project functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?
My negative thoughts tells me that the final scenario is true; that all may indeed be lost. My positive feelings, though, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways available.
In my case, working in journalism analysis, that’s about urging journalists to adhere, more thoroughly, to their mission of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it could mean working on congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or discovering methods to safeguard electoral access.
Not even one year prior, we were in a very different place. In the future? Or after another term? The reality is, we don’t know. All we can do is to strive to not give up.
