Stokes Secures 6 Wickets in English Test Series Preparation Match
Practice match, Perth venue (first day of 3)
Development squad 382: Jacks 84, McKinney 67; Stokes 6-52
England XI: awaiting batting
Ben Stokes achieved six wickets in his initial appearance following July but England faced an fitness worry involving Mark Wood on the first day of their Test preparation against the development squad in Western Australia.
Captain's Outstanding Return
The England captain, returning after approximately four months away with a shoulder problem, bowled sixteen overs across three spells for his 6-52 versus England Lions – each to catches taken on the leg side.
Wood's Injury Concern
Fast bowler Wood, also making his comeback after 9 months away with a knee injury, delivered a pre-planned number of eight overs before exiting the field in the afternoon session because of a hamstring issue. He will receive scanning on Friday.
Wood's injury sucked the energy out of the day, as the England Lions were bowled out for three hundred eighty-two on a slow, low surface after an uncontested toss at the venue.
Team Planning
England wanted to bowl first to build bowling fitness before the first Ashes Test at Optus Stadium, beginning on November 21st.
In a possible hint towards their first-Test plans, the tourists selected an fast bowling lineup – four specialist bowlers plus Stokes – and omitted spin bowler Bashir in the Lions.
Batting Performance Standouts
Bethell failed to press his claim for selection in the Test side, making just two runs, but Jacks enhanced his claim to be called upon during the series by hitting eighty-four.
McKinney, Cox, teenage Rew and Potts also made half-centuries.
Low-key Environment
England's decision to play a single warm-up game against the development squad has been questioned by some former players but the captain hit back by calling the doubters "past players".
A low-pressure first day in front of a smattering of spectators at Lilac Hill was certainly a different experience from what the team will encounter at a packed Optus Stadium the following week.
Captain's Supreme Return
Stokes was excellent in the series against the Indian team in the home summer, only to strain himself to breaking point. He missed the last match with a shoulder tear.
The captain has not managed a full part in any of the team's past four series because of different fitness issues and the team's hopes of winning back the Ashes are significantly reduced if he misses any of the five matches in Australia.
He has been bowling at full pace for 60 days and looked in good condition on Wednesday, even if he could not believe the way in which some of his dismissals were gifted.
Jacks Strengthens Claim
Will Jacks is not expected to feature in the first Test – England look to have revealed their hand with the XI selected here. Nevertheless, he may have nudged himself ahead of the struggling Bethell with his 84, which came at almost a run a ball.
Even before the doubt over Mark Wood, the five seamers in the team lineup for this game may not have been the attack for the initial match.
Brydon Carse missed the first day because of illness, with his place going to Tongue. Josh Tongue had Lions opener Ben McKinney caught behind just after lunch.
Although Stokes took the scalps, Jofra Archer impressed observers. He was energetic with the fresh ball and once more after lunch, when he discomforted Will Jacks.
In the absence of Shoaib Bashir and with Wood leaving the field, Root was asked to deliver fourteen overs of his off-spin. It was average performance, costing 117 at an run rate of over eight.
Joe Root at least took a scalp in the final session when Matt Fisher somehow struck a full delivery to mid-on before Archer bounced out Matthew Potts for 53 with the last delivery of the day.
